Kenwood was saved from developers by the brewing magnate Edward Cecil Guinness, 1st Earl of Iveagh, who opened the house and estate for the enjoyment of the public. Iveagh bequeathed 63 paintings from his own collection, including many masterpieces. In this portrait he wears the ball dress uniform of an honorary lieutenant in the Royal Naval Reserve, showing the blue sash and Star of the Order of St Patrick.
