One of the world’s greatest masterpieces, this painting is arguably the definitive self-portrait by Rembrandt. It was painted in his later life when he was impoverished and alone. He is depicted in his studio, in his working clothes of a fur-trimmed gown (known as a tabard) and white linen cap. He holds a palette, brushes and mahlstick (a support for his painting hand) – the attributes of his profession.
