Lady Howe accompanied her husband to the spa town of Bath, where he ‘took the waters’ to relieve his gout. While there, she and her husband were painted by the fashionable portraitist Thomas Gainsborough in 1764. This elegant portrait (only his third life-size full-length painting) was inspired by the work of Van Dyck and shows Lady Howe in a fashionable pink silk dress with triple lace ruffles and a wide straw bonnet.
